My favorite:
#32 Vogue (May 2004) Photographer Irving Penn captures Nicole Kidman’s back profile dressed in a Christian Lacroix oyster satin backless dress for this cover of the May 2004 issue of Vogue. This was the first cover shoot for Vogue by Penn since 1989. The issue contains more photographs of Kidman dressed as a Grecian goddess, an Italian diva and as legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt.

The first thing that comes to my mind with this cover is elogance. Everything about her is propper and the clothes that she's wearing are very formal. The background has two different shades. On the left it's real dark and it kind of blends in with her black glove and on the right side it's lighter so her back and the right side of her dress is brighter than everything else. A light may have been above her because her face is really lit up. Vogue is a fashion magazine and with this cover, it shows what it's about.

Cover History

Early Magazine Covers didn't show what was going to be inside the magazine. It usually showed the table of contents and sometimes they'd put illustrations of books on the front page. Symbolism was used but it never gave all of the contents away.

The Poster Cover was engraved on the cover at first, then advanced into taking pictures. It was mainly just the picture with no words on the cover. They usually conveyed a certain mood. The picture said it all so there was no need for many headlines.

Pictures Married to Type relied on catchy titles to get a reader's attention and didn't worry about the picture so much. They'd place a model front and center of the cover and used her to cover up some letters and they'd use the text to put on the objects of the picture

In the Forest of Words cover lines and art were the most important thing. It got the reader to want to read it because it was so exciting. They placed half naked women on their to get more male readers and it made women want to look like the girls on the cover.

My portrait

I'm going to take a portrait of another person.
Shaun *Cameron* Kelly is going to be my partner. It's going to be informal. I want to make it unique and cute. I'm thinking about making it black and white and having red roses somewhere near him and on photoshop, leave the picture black and white and restore the color in the roses. I'd use stuff that he got me in the past like my stuffed animal, Penguin man.

War Photography

The life of a war photographer is very emotional because he has to witness things first hand and he puts himself in danger. There was a part in the movie where someone threw a gas bomb and it went off right next to him and it was hard for him to breathe. But I think it's a good j0b for him because he helps get the people's stories out to the world and we can all see what's happening in places that aren't well known. I think the relationship he has with his objects is a close relationship because the people that he's taking pictures of could yell at him or tell him to leave but they don't. They let him do his job. But at the same time, their relationship is distant because if he got too close to the people then it would be even more emotional to take pictures of them because he got to know them.

The Decisive Moment

1. Choose the portrait you like the most, and write the photo number. #51

2. Briefly describe the photo. What is the CVI? Is it a formal portrait, an informal portrait, or something else?
Two little kids are on a bench and the little boy is going to kiss the girl. The two kids are the CVI. This is an environmental portrait because the kids are the center part but all around them is envirment.

3. Form- What are the major composition techniques used in this photo, and how are they used?
They use the rule of thirds and their butts are on the bottom thirds and their heads are in the center.

4. Content - What are the eye positions, and how does this affect the photo? Describe the lighting.
They're looking at eachother and don't even notice the camera so it shows that it was just captured. The lighting is kind of shadowing on them and around them is really bright. The tree is casting a shadow on them.

5. Expression- What is happening in this photo that makes this moment "decisive?"
The boy put his arm around her and is leaning in to kiss her and the girl is looking kind of embarrassed.

6. Read the caption, and explain one thing that is interesting about the person / scene.
There is not caption but it's interesting because they'r sitting under a tree and right as the boy is about to kiss her, the picture is taken.

Portraits

A formal protratit is posed, they're looking into the camera and the background is usually all black. Informal is when they're doing something unusual and environmental is when it's showing the background. The eyes tell us whether or not it's posed. Background and body position tell us what they're doing. If it's dark in the background its usually formal, if the body position is different its probably informal. The lighting usually makes the portrait serious. Or they could use a technique using lighting.

The dog

The shutter speed is 1/500. You can also see that it’s fast action because the dogs is jumping into the water and when the water splashes up, there’s no blur.
