A formal protratit is posed, they're looking into the camera and the background is usually all black. Informal is when they're doing something unusual and environmental is when it's showing the background. The eyes tell us whether or not it's posed.Background and body position tell us what they're doing. If it's dark in the background its usually formal, if the body position is different its probably informal.The lighting usually makes the portrait serious. Or they could use a technique using lighting.
